Go back a couple of years and the choice of mobile phones for the business market was a very simple one. For the savvy entrepreneur, the only real option was a Blackberry, but technology moves fast and the way people use their mobile phone has changed beyond all recognition. We’ve gone from the uniqueness of physical keyboards and push email, to smartphones that are more like miniature computers in our pockets.

As we charge, head first, deeper into the 21st Century, it’s time to take a step back from our hectic schedules and take a look at what’s available today. The demands of the tech-savvy entrepreneur have changed and so too has the market. Blackberry is no longer the only viable option, so what are the best business mobiles currently on the market? Let’s take a look.

The needs of the modern businessman (and woman) are different from those requiring a mobile phone purely for their own personal use. Depending on their circumstances, they will need to consider things like security, cost and perceived value, as well as convenience and usability. The reason Research In Motion’s BlackBerry was so successful was that it was streets ahead of the competition on almost all of those things. Nowadays, that’s just not the case.

In today’s competitive, ever-changing smartphone market, the choice of phone can’t be made purely on the manufacturer itself. We have to consider the operating system that the phone uses. We now have a choice of 4 main operating systems; iOS, Android, Blackberry OS10 and Windows Phone, all of which bring their own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Despite their recent financial problems and ever-diminishing market share, BlackBerry still has a huge part to play in the market going forward. They have recently swapped their own much-maligned operating system in favour of Android, which brings us to the BlackBerry Priv.

The Priv is the first BlackBerry phone to use the Android operating system, and it looks nothing like the phones we’re used to seeing from the Canadian company. The traditional OS has gone, but the physical keyboard remains, albeit one that slides out, rather than being permanently on display. BlackBerry’s security know-how is kept intact to please IT departments around the world, but the Priv also utilises the power and familiarity of the Android OS. The Priv is the best BlackBerry phone they’ve released in years.

If you are more of an old-school phone user, BlackBerry still have something for you. The BlackBerry Classic retains all the things people loved about the old phone; a square display, physical keyboard, BlackBerry’s own, albeit updated, OS10 software and a battery that delivers up to 22 hours of use.

When it comes to iOS, Apple’s all-conquering iPhone is your only option in the smartphone market, although there are now a multitude of models to choose from. Their latest, the 6S and 6S+ have been making inroads into the Enterprise market for many years, thanks in part, to their close working relationship with IBM. It’s clearly paying off, as this phone is their best yet.

If you like your phone screens on the larger side, then the 6S+ has a 5.5” display which offers incredible visuals and the A9 processor under the bonnet is more than capable of doing everything you need it to, from spreadsheets to graphic design. It also has the largest App Store, with more than a 1.5 million apps that will allow you to do almost everything you want to do with your phone. They are also winning over the traditionally cautious IT departments of the world with their latest operating system, iOS9, and the security, set-up and device management it offers. It really is a contender for your next business phone.

When it comes to the Windows Phone, the standout phone from Microsoft is the Lumia 950 (or 950 XL if you like a larger screen). It may not have the widespread appeal of iOS or Android and a very limited amount of apps compared to the others, but this phone is still one of the best available.

It’s taken Microsoft a long time to catch up to Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, but this phone shows they are on the way. The phone itself has around 3Gb of RAM, 32GB onboard storage and a 20 MP camera. When you connect it to the Microsoft HD-500 dock, it transforms into a powerful desktop PC too, so it will play nicely with all your Office documents.

Technology is a fast moving field and there are new phones coming out almost every month, each one a little more powerful, a little faster and a little thinner than its predecessor. Whatever you choose, you’re going to get a phone that will be an asset to you and an incredible tool as you work your way up the corporate ladder.
