Samsung Galaxy S7 Rumours

With Samsung expected to unveil the new Galaxy S7 and S7 edge phones at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on the 21st of this month, we take a look at the many rumours about these Smartphones that have been doing the rounds over the last week or so…

First and foremost, let’s have a quick recap of last year’s flagship offerings from Samsung – the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. Arguably, Samsung took the crown in the design stakes last year when they went after Apple with their sleek new S6 handsets. Whilst previous Samsung Smartphones had been criticised by some for being unattractive, plain, cheap and plastic-looking, the S6 and S6 edge remain strong contenders for the best looking phones currently on the market. However, many a Samsung fan was disappointed that the S6 phones lacked a microSD card slot.

So, what can we expect from this year’s Galaxy’s? Judging by the pictures that have been leaked from various sources, the S7 phones will have much the same look as their predecessors. However, it is thought that this time the edge will have a larger 5.5-inch screen, compared to the standard 5.1-inch screen that the standard S7 is expected to have. Having said this, conflicting rumours have been circulating regarding the screen size of the new phones. Some have even been suggesting that one or both of the phones will sport a large 5.7-inch screen. This, however, seems unlikely given that Samsung will probably release more of their Edge and Note branded phablets later this year.

The display resolution is likely to stay the same as the S6, which has 2560 x 1440 pixels. It’s expected that the S7 will also have a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera and 5-megapixel front facing camera. It’s also expected that the new phones will have a pressure sensitive display, much like the iPhone’s 3D Touch.

According to the rumours, the S7 will run a Samsung-made processor, whilst the S7 edge will use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor. It has also been suggested that a more powerful Exynos 8890 version will be made to cater for the Asian market. We are expecting to see 4gb of RAM and 64gb storage with the new phones. However, Samsung fans will be pleased to hear that there is an expected return of the micro SD card slots, which could provide capacity for an additional 128gb storage.

Much like the older Galaxy S5 phones, the S7’s are likely to be water and dust resistant, which can only be a good thing. However, to help with waterproofing, this does mean that the S7’s battery is unlikely to be removable, but it is thought that Samsung have worked on extending the battery life with these phones.

Samsung, of course, are saying nothing until the big unveiling in less than two weeks’ time, when all will be revealed. What we can be sure of though, is that these new flagships from Samsung are unlikely to retail for much less than £600, so you’d better get saving if you’re keen to be amongst the first to get your hands on one of these phones as they are likely to hit the shops between the end of March – beginning of April.
