A new study has revealed that the biggest cause of business IT outages in the UK is an unreliable power supply. Power outages leave businesses high and dry, and for many, downtime can be expensive, especially if outages are occurring regularly. In a survey, 39% of respondents said the cost per minute of IT downtime at their companies ran over £10,000. Despite this, all too many businesses do not have a strong disaster recovery plan, with only 5% confident their plan will offer complete protection, and with only 6% committing to regular testing of their plans every month.
The study, conducted by Timico, also showed the next most common causes of IT outages were software failure (21%) and hardware failure (19%), with human error, natural disaster, and malicious activity not far behind.
While some causes of IT downtime can be difficult to protect against, or out of your control entirely, power failure needn’t be one of them. Your business can easily safeguard itself against a power outage by choosing an internet and telephone provider with an uninterruptable power supply in place. At Midland Networks, we understand your telephone and internet connections are vital to the operation of your business. That’s why we use an uninterruptable power supply to support our processes, meaning if the power goes down, your business is protected automatically. Our UPS system provides near-instantaneous support in the event of a power outage, protecting your internet and telephone systems, and your productivity, until the power comes back online.
